Day 3: October 10, 2021 Amman-Jerash

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for our city tour of Amman. Walk through the markets of Amman, and tour the Citadel. This impressive historical site displays a long history of occupation by many great civilizations. It is breathtaking to see most of the buildings still visible at the site from the Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods. The Jordanian Archaeological Museum also sits atop the Citadel, and is one of the most impressive museums in the city. We will then make our way to visit the 2nd-century 6.000 seat Roman Amphitheater. The theatre is split into three tiers. The lowest tier nearest the action was reserved for the nobles, the next up for the military and the top for the rest of the citizens. After taking in the views and learning about the history of Amman, we set off for our unique cultural experience at Bait Khayrat Souf . This local woman’s organization is known as the spot for tasting and experiencing authentic Jordanian culture. Learn about the women of Jordan and enjoy a homemade lunch. After lunch we will drive to Jerash the “Pompeii” of the Middle East, and the most beautiful preserved Greco-Roman city in existence. Its imposing ceremonial gates, colonnaded avenues, temples and theatres all speak to the time when this was an important imperial centre. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash reveals a fine example of the grand, formal provincial Roman urbanism that is found throughout the Middle East. Transfer back to downtown Amman for a very traditional dinner at the Hasham Restaurant one of the most famous restaurants in the city, where the King of Jordan also has dined. After dinner stop for some sweets at Habiba bakery, famous for serving knafeh; a cheesy sweet Arabic desert. On our way back to the hotel experience a Sunset View from the Citadel in Amman and reflect on this extraordinary day. Overnight in Amman.

Day 4: October 11, 2021 Desert Castles-Cooking Class

After breakfast we depart for exploring Jordan’s Desert Castles. As you visit each one in the desert plains of eastern Jordan. Explore UNESCO-listed Qusayr Amra, famous for its 8th-century frescoes of hedonistic scenes, before continuing to the atmospheric Qasr Kharana and Qasr al-Azraq castles, the latter used as a military base by TE Lawrence, known as ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’ during World War I. Our journey continues to Iraq al-Amir, surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs of the Jordan Valley, you’ll be warmly welcomed with a traditional hot mint tea by the Cooperative Society. Here we will participate in a traditional cooking class. Learn to cook delicious traditional Arabic dishes from the local women of Iraq Al Amir. After breakfast we begin our day with a tour of Kerak, the biggest fortress in Levant. The fortress was built between 1110 and 1143 B.C. during the Crusades. Kerak City is set on a triangular plateau which rises 900 meters above sea level, surrounded by ancient walls forming the old city.
